Parentage/origins: Newhall nucellar navel orange (VI 387) is a seedling nucellar selection that originated from the old budline Newhall.  The old budline Newhall originated as a limb sport of a Washington navel orange in the Duarte area and was selected by Paul Hackney of Newhall Land and Water Company of Piru. 

Rootstocks of accession: Carrizo citrange, C-35 citrange

Season of ripeness at Riverside: November to January

Notes and observations:

WPB: Budwood obtained from the Newhall Ranch, Newhall and Cascade Junction. This fruit is more oblong and a deeper orange color than regular Wash. navel. It arose as a sport on an old tree in the original Newhall Ranch in Fish Canyon at Duarte.

EMN, 2/12/1988: Fruit is typical of Newhall- good color, elongate, good flavor.

The fruit of Newhall mature slightly earlier and are slightly smaller in size with deeper rind color and flesh color than Washington navel orange.  Newhall navel orange trees are somewhat less vigorous and have leaves that are slightly darker in color than Washington navel orange trees.

Availability: Commercially available in California through the Citrus Clonal Protection Program.
